14TDR reflectometry of insulated cables with Megger TDR1000 in the field
📘 IEEE Std 1234

Reflectometry of Low- and Medium-Voltage Insulated Cables

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) sends low-voltage pulses along the cable; wherever there is an impedance change —fault, splice, tap, open or short circuit, moisture— part of the pulse is reflected. By measuring the return time and the cable's velocity factor (VF), the distance to the point is located precisely. It is the ideal technique for fault pre-location and the verification of LV and MV cables, quickly and non-destructively.

  • Fault location and pre-location
  • Cable length measurement
  • Detection of splices, taps and terminations
  • Open and short circuits
  • Impedance changes and presence of moisture
  • Velocity factor (VF) adjustment by cable type
